I HAVE RELOADED IT FOR THE AMUSEMENT OF HELMET FANS, NOT FOR ANY COMPREHENSIVE AND RELIABLE KNOWLEDGE IT MAY CONTAIN.
THE LISTINGS OF HELMET WEBSITES AND BOOKS ARE ALMOST ALL OBSOLETE BUT ARE RETAINED FOR HISTORICAL INTEREST.
MANY LINKS ARE OBSOLETE; THEY HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATED EVEN IS POSSIBLE AS THIS IS AN ARCHIVE PAGE, NOT SOMETHING CURRENTLY USEFUL.

images. Greg Pickersgill's HELMET COLLECTIONI started off this helmet collecting website in April 2003 saying that it was - " a very rough snapshot of my helmet collection as it was in mid-2001, when I first had access to a digital camera. The pictures are sometimes poor as it was a borrowed camera and I didn't have time to learn to use it properly. I didn't even have enough sense to take proper three-views of everything. Hopeless, really." Well, since then things have changed. Many of the original photographs remain, many more have been added, and the notes have been expanded. The photographs are just about acceptable - not up to the standard of some other helmet sites - but they serve their purpose in helping make positive identifications. Things will improve. I will expand and amplify the notes, and eventually replace all the poor photographs with better ones; assuming I ever stop frittering my money away on helmets and buy a decent camera instead. This helmet site is never going to be as detailed or thorough as the brilliant Joseba's, or Teodor's or Markku Karvonen's or many others. I don't pretend I can compete with their level of knowledge or, in Joseba's case, web design. I won't be dwelling on the purely technical too much; I'll leave that to the better informed among us. I do not have the time, location, or resources to do any worthwhile primary research, so I'm entirely dependent on my reference library, the web, and other collectors for information. What I am really trying for is a straightforward enthusiast's site, giving details and observations about my own collection that should be useful to other comparatively new helmet fans like myself. The whole point of this site is to be a simple identification guide that will be of use to other new collectors who just need to know "What IS That?", and will concern themselves with the detail (and boy, is there some detail...) later. Yes, I could add in a lot of stuff, but frankly all I would be doing is copy-typing from my helmet reference books or from other people's websites. That latter seems a pointless duplication of effort when you can go to their websites easily by following the links I give on the Helmet Websites and Books page. Apart from anything else I come from the science fiction fan community, where informed enthusiasm is highly valued, and we often prefer a more personal and conversational tone as opposed to the simple detailing of facts and figures. I mean, at the death, helmet collecting is fun, but like all good fun it needs to be taken seriously to get the most out of it. Please note - the annotations to the photographs are basic at the moment; I will include more historical detail and personal observations as this site develops, but for the moment I am happy to let the photographs stand as useful identification guide material. If anyone wants more information about any helmet featured, please contact me. Greg Pickersgill - December 2003 (Thanks to

may not always take you where you expect! Please email me with comments and information - especially corrections when I have things wrong! But please note, this site was constructed more than 20 years ago - I know a lot more about helmets now than I did then. a temporary page of helmet queries is here - can you help? |
